uWe live in a world where 3D-printing is no longer a novelty, but a technology ingrained into our way of living. For example, I recently had a friend send me, and my family 3D-printed face masks. How awesome is that? It took a few days for her to print them and send them, but still!
It’s amazing to think that what was once thought of as a novel technology is now being used to create objects that have a significant impact on the world around us. What’s also amazing is how easily accessible these devices are becoming to anyone who wants to get into the world of 3D printing.
One company making this a reality is Creality, which has released another solid 3D printer in its Ender lineup, the Ender 5. This printer offers plenty of features and functionality while remaining simple enough that even an amateur can use it.
But our goal isn’t to provide a high-level view of this printer. We want to get into the details. What features does it offer? Is it reliable? How is it different than other 3D printers on the market? Does it have any upgrades?

There are several different aspects and considerations you’ll want to think about before you purchase a 3D printer. Here’s a shortlist of what to consider.

Of course, one of the biggest areas people need to think about is cost. How much are you able to spend? That may limit the size and type of 3D printer you can purchase. The great thing about the Ender 5 is that it’s likely to be within the budget for more people.
Quality

Now let’s get into our review of the Ener 5 3D printer.
Initial Thoughts
My first impression of the Ender 5 3D printer is that it’s a solid entry into the world of 3D printing. While the printer isn’t a mini by any stretch of the imagination, it still won’t take up too much room in your home or office.
The printer measures at 440mm x 410mm x 465mm, offering plenty of build volume space checking in at 220mm x 220m x 300mm. For power, the Ender 5 comes with a 24V/350W power supply.
With such a strong power supply, the Ender 5 offers a quick heating print bed, which results in a faster printing rate. Lastly, the 3D printer doesn’t have any dangling or lose wires, instead of ensuring that the cables are covered and protected.
Setup
If you’re familiar with the Ender lineup of 3D printers, then you’ll have no trouble getting your Ender 5 setup and running. But even if you’re not, the axes come pre-assembled, which means even a novice should be able to get everything set up relatively quickly.
The entire setup process shouldn’t take more than an hour, which of course will depend on your experience and understanding of 3D printers. Included in the package is an instruction manual that will help guide you through the setup.
Fortunately, the manual is easy to understand, which means even if you’re new to 3D printers, you’ll be up and running in no time. Along with the manual, you’ll also find some tools to use as you get everything set up.
You’ll find a screwdriver, a wrench, and SD card reader, and an SD card. Also included are a spatula, a nozzle cleaner, a pair of pliers, and a USB cable. Aside from these, your Ender 5 comes with 200 grams of filament, so you can start printing as soon as everything is ready.
Included Software
Loaded onto the SD card that comes with the Ender 5 is the Cura 15 software. Unfortunately, the version included only works with Windows, so if you have a Linux or Mac OS machine, you’ll have to take a few extra steps to access the software.
While downloading the software for Mac OS and Linux is free straight from the manufacturer’s website, the challenge is entering all the profile data yourself. Once everything is done, the Cura software does exactly what you want it to do.

Quality
You can expect to print high-resolution objects, thanks to the precision the Ender 5 has to offer. The quality offers accuracy down to 0.05mm, which is something you won’t find in some of the other 3D printers on the market.
Operation
Ender 5 uses FDM 3D printing, which is one of the many reasons it’s so easy to use. There are others as well, but we’ll get to those in a moment. Additionally, by using PLA, you’ll safe on the cost of printing materials, which is always nice if you’re on a budget.
Additionally, maintaining the Ender 5 is a piece of cake. It’s easy to access areas that may cause problems, but that shouldn’t be too much of a concern since the Ender series 3D printers aren’t prone to problems or failures.

Here are a few common questions you might encounter when researching more information about the Ender 5, or about 3D printing in general.
Which materials can be used with the Ender 5?
Creality’s Ender 5 3D printer will print with ABS, COPPER, PLA, TPU, and WOOD. The MK10 extruder that comes with the printer aids in reducing the possibility of filament jams occurring. The printer also offers a fan for using PLA-type material while printing.

What is the ideal temperature when printing with PLA?

The downloads from Creality only include instructions and software for flashing the firmware from Windows.If you don't have access to a Windows machine there is another way: avrdude.However, there are a few steps you need to take to work out how to flash your printer.
These instructions refer specifically to the Ender 5 Plus but I've tried to make them a bit more open-ended so that you'll be able to work out how to do this for other printers in their range. They are fairly generic and therefore should work for both OSX/macOS and Linux users.
Before you start
1. Download and unpack the firmware upgrade
You can get this from https://www.creality3dofficial.com/pages/firmware-download.In the 'mainboard' directory there will be a '.hex' file. This is the firmware image.
2. You'll need a copy of avrdude, which can be installed via homebrew if you don't already have it:

This allows you to interrogate the printer before you start flashing.I used CoolTerm.
Preparation
4. Find out which USB to serial chip is on the controller board.
You'll be using the MicroUSB port on the controller board (exposed through the casing), which connects the to the controller chip using a serial port.If your computer doesn't recognise the USB to serial port hardware (this is a single chip on the mainboard) you'll need to know which driver to install.Step 5 explains how to open up the printer control box and inspect the mainboard.
5. Find out which controller your printer uses.
You need to specify the controller when you run avrdude.I put my Ender 5 Plus carefully on its side and removed six screws securing the bottom cover of the control box.Don't let the cover drop as there's a cooling fan attached to it which is wired to the mainboard.
The mainboard is mounted to the top of the control box and is easily inspected.Take two or three clear photos and then put the cover back on.My Creality mainboard has an FT232RL chip for USB to serial and an ATmega2560 controller.
Knowing the USB to serial chip will allow you to find the correct driver for your operating system.Knowing the controller allows you to work out what part number to specify when running avrdude.
To translate the name of the controller into an avrdude part number there's a convenient list available from avrdude itself.If you specify an invalid part number then it prints the full list of supported parts:
Find your controller in the list. For me, the ATmega2560 has part number m2560.
6. Work out which programmer you need to use.
This is dependent on which programmer is flashed into the bootloader.There's no easy way to find this out.If Creality have released the source code for your printer then the answer should be there.Failing that, contact Creality, or Google is your friend.I eventually found out that the Atmel AVR ISP mkII had been used.
To translate the name of the programmer into an avrdude programmer name there's a convenient list available from avrdude itself.If you specify an invalid programmer then it prints the full list of supported programmers:
Near the top of the list I found 'avrispmkII = Atmel AVR ISP mkII', so my programmer name is 'avrispmkII'.
7. Now you're in a position to connect to your printer.
Disconnect the printer from the mains, then connect the printer to one of your USB ports.The display should now power up and a new entry should appear in /dev with a 'tty' prefix.
If you can't see a new tty then now is the time to install the USB to serial port driver.On my MacBook Pro the serial port appeared as /dev/tty.usbserial-AM00NE7A and no USB to serial driver was required.
8. Interrogate your printer.
Using a program such as CoolTerm you can now open a connection to the controller.I set the baud rate to 115200 and got the following output when I connected:
So now I know that communication through to the controller is working and I know I have the right baud rate.
Shut down the terminal program.
9. Flash the software
